Mind Messers

Sometimes a film really makes you think, and perhaps question reality and distrust every character.

1. Coherence; James Ward Byrkit Click here to see trailer

A large group of friends' dinner party slowly descends into chaos as a comet which has been known to confuse humanity passes overhead. The foreshadowing in this film is clever, and confusing, you will be trying to spot more clues and decode what is really going on. The script seems as though it is being made up as we go along, giving this film a realistic sense of panic and frustration, as well as the good use of shaky cam.

2. The Prestige; Christopher Nolan Click here to see trailer

This movie has not one, but several excellent plot twists that will engross you in every moment of the film. In short, Batman and Wolverine fight each other with magic. Set in 20th Century England two magicians, Robert Angier (Hugh Jackman) and Alfred Borden (Christian Bale) attempt to one-up each other on stage after Robert's wife Julia is killed in an illusion gone wrong. Are you watching closely?

3. The Others; Alejandro Amenábar Click here to see trailer

In the wake of WW2, Grace (Nicole Kidman) and her two strange and quiet children Nicholas and Anne live a secluded life in a large, empty mansion. Upon hiring house keepers and a gardener, strange things start happening in the house - Grace and her daughter believe there is someone living in the house with them. This movie well and truly blew my mind, and a twist that will drop jaws.

4. Secret Window; David Keopp Click here to see trailer

Mort Rainey (Johnny Depp) is a slack and lonely writer, being stalked by a strange man (John Turturro) who accuses him of plagiarising his work. Mort is also stalked by the memories of his now estranged wife, whom he caught in the midst of an affair. The tagline for this film is "The most important part of a story is the ending." and this rings true for this movie, too.

5. Looper; Rian Johnson Click here to see trailer

In the year 2074 DNA technology makes it impossible to get away with murder, so mobsters wanting to kill someone send them back in time where a hitman awaits to do the job for them. Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is one of these hitmen, and eventually comes face to face with himself from the future and hence faced with the dilemma of killing him.

6. Prisoners; Denis Vileneuve Click here to see trailer

Two young girls go missing on Thanksgiving, and their fathers Keller Dover (Hugh Jackman) and Franklin Birch (Terrence Howard) take matters into their own hands when the police fail to find the girls. Detective Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal) notices the strange way in which Keller is acting and starts following him. This movie is as intense as it is absorbing, the continuous sense of dread of the unknown made it impossible to tear my eyes away from the screen!

7. Before I Go to Sleep; Rowan Joffé Click here to see trailer

Everyday that Christine (Nicole Kidman) wakes up she loses her memory and has to rebuild her life with pictures her loving husband, Mike (Colin Firth) has prepared for her waking up each day. When her therapist, (Mark Strong) suggests she keeps a video diary secret from her husband, she (and us) grow suspicious of every one and every story. This film will make you question who, and who not to trust!

8. Shutter Island; Martin Scorsese Click here to see trailer

This movie is as beautifully suspenseful as it is sad. Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio), a U.S marshal is sent to an island hospital for the criminally insane to investigate the disappearance of one of the patients. The more puzzling the case becomes, the more we distrust Teddy's partner, his memory and even his own sanity.
