Actually Horrifying #2
More horror movies which are guaranteed to keep you up at night.
1. The Fourth Kind; Olatunde Osunsanmi Click here to see trailer
This film begins with Milla Jovovich claiming that the following is a true story, featuring some archival footage from the case - although this isn't true at all, it still adds to the suspense. In a small town, Alaska, psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler (Milla Jovovich) is noticing a strange pattern in her patients complaints, which coincide with missing persons cases from the 60s. The answer may come from something extra terrestrial.
2. The Village; M. Night Shyamalan Click here to see trailer
A small 19th century village has come to a truce with the monsters living in their forest - they won't bother each other. But the increasingly terrifying noises of the creatures makes the townsfolk believe that they monsters are getting ready to attack. This film is creepy and enthralling, and with a famous M. Night Shyamalan twist of course!
3. The Strangers; Bryan Bertino Click here to see trailer
Again, the 'based off a true story' premise is misleading - but still terrifying as this situation is quite believable. A young couple (Liv Tyler & Scott Speedman) are staying at a holiday home in the middle of nowhere - which makes it quite concerning when a strange woman knocks on the door. The woman is accompanied by some very dangerous masked friends.
4. Lights Out; David Sandberg Click here to see trailer
Only watch this film if you are prepared to sleep with the lights on for the next week. A young boy (Gabriel Bateman) and his older sister (Teresa Palmer) have been haunted by a black figure which only comes out when the lights are switched off - and they're realising that their mother may have something to do with it. Directed by the same guy as The Conjuring, and produced by the same guy as Insidious - you can expect a good quality movie with some good quality jump-frights.
5. Sinister; Scott Derrickson Click here to see trailer
Writer Ellison (Ethan Hawke) moves his family into a new home which holds some terrifying secrets. Ellison explores the home and finds some snuff-film type videos in the attic. The more he tries to figure out what is going on, the more he and his family are haunted by an evil creature who lives in the images.
6. Blair Witch; Adam Wingard Click here to see trailer
This film is the sequel to the 90s hit horror, The Blair Witch Project - one of the first 'hand-cam' movies which also put an entire generation off camping. Nearly 20 years after his sister went missing in the Black Hills Forest, James (James Allen McCune) convinces his group of friends to make the same trip his sister did in an attempt to uncover the mysteries and myths of the Blair Witch.
7. The Grudge; Takashi Shimizu Click here to see trailer
Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) has been hired by a family to look after their frail mother, but the family seems to be terrorized by something inhuman and follows Karen. Although not critically revered, this was one of my favourite movies as a teen - expect some decent jump frights and a cool, dark Japanese setting.
8. Unfriended; Leo Gabriadze Click here to see trailer
Another hand-cam horror film, but this time with a modern twist. When an embarrassing video is spread around the internet of teen Laura, she kills herself and that too is caught on camera. A group of friends are chatting online when a mystery account adds itself to their chat, and claims to be Laura. The group of friends is one-by-one confronted by the account and forced to confess their darkest secrets, but not everyone makes it out alive.
