Decades

The setting of any movie is very important, this doesn't just mean the location but also the time era. Each of these movies represent a decade in recent history.

1. Australia (1940s); Baz Lurhmann Click here to see trailer

Just before World War 2 breaks out, posh and wealthy Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman) moves from her home in England to the rough, hot, and rugged outback Australia. She meets Drover (Hugh Jackman) and helps him heard cattle to Darwin. As you can imagine they not only have to deal with the harsh outback conditions - but also their love for each other, adopting an Aboriginal child, and bomb threats from the Japanese.

2. My Week with Marilyn (1950s); Simon Curtis Click here to see trailer

This is a story of arguably the most famous woman in Hollywood - Marilyn Monroe. Played spectacularly by Michelle Williams this movie gives us a glimpse into the glamorous and melancholic life of the star. Colin (Eddie Redmayne) is working on the set of an upcoming films starring recently married Monroe. When she takes a liking to him, he must decide whether to indulge her advances and risk his reputation.

3. An Education (1960s); Lone Scherfig Click here to see trailer

This coming of age film is both controversial and strangely uplifting. Young school girl, Jenny (Carey Mulligan) has lead a simple life and wishes for something more than to simply get good grades and then go off to university - much to her parents dismay. Much older David (Peter Sarsgaard) catches her eye and they begin dating, as he teaches her through 'the university of life'. Although Jenny is completely swept off her feet, her friends (and the audience) feel quite uneasy about their relationship.

4. Boogie Nights (1970s); Paul Thomas Anderson Click here to see trailer

Set in the drug, dance, and sex obsessed decade of the seventies, this film follows young 'porn star' prodigy Eddie (Mark Wahlberg) and his rise to the top of the industry. This film has a large onslaught of famous names including Burt Reynolds, Julianne Moore, John C. Reilly, Heather Graham, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, who costar the now infamous Dirk Diggler and his eventual fall from grace.

5. Jarhead (1980s); Sam Mendes Click here to see trailer

Anthony Swofford (Jake Gyllenhaal) joins the marines shortly before the start of the Gulf War, and as a result is shipped out with his friend. Of course the road to war is extremely difficult and the pair try to keep themselves alive in order to make it home. This is quite an original take on the war film - as it deals with the psychological impact of conflict, rather than the guns and explosions.

6. Joy (1990s); David O. Russell Click here to see trailer

This is quite the girl power film - follwing Joy (Jennifer Lawrence) who turns her mundane, loveless, poor, life into that of an entrepreneur. This is based on the true story of Joy Mangano who turned herself into a millionaire by inventing the  self-wringing mop.

7. War Dogs (2000s); Todd Phillips Click here to see trailer

Starring two of my favourite actors at the moment, this film follows a pair of mismatched friends (Jonah Hill & Miles Teller) who discover a way to make big bucks off of the Iraq war by dealing arms. Of course this business is as shady as it sounds, and the pair find themselves in the middle of nowhere being hunted.

8. The Good Neighbour (2010s); Kasra Farahani Click here to see trailer

Although the reviews aren't flash hot, I actually really enjoyed this movie and the whole twist on the 'creepy man living next door'. Two friends, Ethan and Sean (Logan Miller & Keir Gilchrist), dislike their grumpy neighbour who's wife recently left. The decide to conduct a 'social experiment' ..or prank.. on the old man which involves tricking him into thinking his house is haunted using technology and science. But of course this goes terribly wrong.
