Thrilled
A good thriller can entice, frighten, and stick with its audience for a long time - with elements of horror, action or sci-fi it's little wonder why this genre does so well at the Box Office.
1. It Follows; David Robert Mitchell Click here to see trailer
This film takes the saying "Don't have sex in a horror movie, or you will die" to a whole new level. Jay (Maika Monroe) sleeps with her new boyfriend, but instead of waking up happily and in love, she wakes up tied to a chair and her frantic boyfriend explaining how this works. He has now passed a demon onto her which will follow her everywhere she goes - unless she sleeps with someone else and passes it on. This premise sounds quite creepy and disgusting - but the movie is very cool with a retro/modern setting, simple script, and cinematography reminiscent of Drive.
2. The Machinist; Brad Anderson Click here to see trailer
Watching this film and the lengths Christian Bale must have gone to to portray such a deranged and ill man was an experience. When Trevor (Christian Bale) causes a serious accident at his job as a factory worker, he begins to consider the mental and physical toll his insomnia is having on him. Trevor, and the audience, must discover what is truth and what is delusion as he slowly descends into madness.
3. The Girl on the Train; Tate Taylor Click here to see trailer
Recently divorced, alcoholic commuter Rachel (Emily Blunt) watches 'the perfect couple' as her train passes their house each day. The longer she watches the more she realises things aren't what they seem - and when the woman goes missing Rachel is a prime suspect. Rachel takes it into her own hands to figure out what happened and to clear her name.
4. Enemy; Denis Villeneuve Click here to see trailer
By the same director as Prisoners you can expect the same dark tone and the same twists and turns. This movie starts of simple enough - Adam (Jake Gyllenhaal), a college professor, spots his doppelganger in a film and sets out to meet the man and see what else we have in common. When his doppelganger is not interested in becoming friends, instead of backing off Adam stalks him and entangles himself in his life. The ending of this film truly left audiences, and me, quite confused and blindsided.
5. Jennifer's Body; Karyn Kusama Click here to see trailer
Needy (Amanda Seiyfried) is your typical quiet and nerdy high school girl, best friends with the most popular and hot Jennifer (Megan Fox). The friendship is already on the rocks, but when Jennifer is possessed by a demon and begins violently killing off the boys at the school, Needy tries to stop her. As you can imagine, it all goes horribly wrong! I am not a fan of Megan Fox or high school based thrillers - but this one has something exciting, unique, and satisfying about it.
6. The Grey; Joe Carnahan Click here to see trailer
This film is the epitome of stress! On the way home from a long-term work mission on Alaskan oil rig, John (Liam Neeson) and his coworkers are stranded in the snow after a vicious snow storm crashes their plane. But the plane crash and snow are the least of their worries - as they have landed in the middle of a hungry wolf pack. With some brutal fight scenes and some seriously scary moments, I have never watched this film a second time and don't plan to.
7. Premonition; Mennan Yapo
Linda (Sandra Bullock) has the perfect life. But this all changes when she wakes up one morning to the news her husband has been killed in a car accident, and she now has to deal with her huge lifestyle change. Then... she wakes up and it was all a dream, but a very accurate dream as all events leading up to her husband's death are happening again. Linda must figure out how to save her husband, but also finds out more than she bargained for.
8. Se7en; David Fincher Click here to see trailer
This is such a classic crime thriller that terrified and disgusted audiences everywhere. When a mysterious murderer shows a pattern of killing people based on the seven deadly sins, Detective William Summerset (Morgan Freeman) battles to figure out the clues and stop any more people being murdered.
