Quirky Romance

Some of the best romance films are not very romantic at all. Whether it be funny, strange, or sad, these are some of my favourite quirky love stories.

1. Big Fish; Tim Burton Click here to see trailer

Edward Bloom (Albert Finney) and his son William (Billy Crudup) have an estranged relationship, Edward's tall tails making it difficult for his son to truly know his dad. The old man is now on his deathbed, yet still sticks to his exaggerated and whimsical stories of finding love and friendship - but as William investigates he begins to understand their true meaning. This movie is funny, magical, and sad - with a cameo appearance from a very young and innocent Miley Cyrus.

2. Love & Other Drugs; Edward Zwick Click here to see trailer

This love story is funny, hot, fast paced, and heartbreaking - and for those Anne Hathaway haters this movie may change your mind. Ladies-man and pharmaceutical salesman Jamie Randall (Jake Gyllenhaal) embarks on his quest to sell the newest drug on the market, viagra. Meanwhile he meets free spirited Maggie Murdock (who suffers from Parkinson's disease) and they begin a rollercoaster relationship, only sexual at first but the two newbies to love discover they might not be able to live without each other.

3. Blast from the Past; Hugh Wilson Click here to see trailer

In 1962 Calvin Webber (Christopher Walken) believes there was a nuclear apocalypse he coaxes his young wife to live in an underground home he had built. Together they raise their son, Adam (Brendan Fraser) in total isolation, but 35 years later when their supplies begin to run out they send Adam out into the world. He now must find his way around the bustling and weird world - and meets a beautiful woman, Eve.

4. Her; Spike Jonze Click here to see trailer

It's the story of the man who fell in love with his version of Siri. Sensitive and heartbroken Theodore (Joaquin Pheonix) buys a new operating system named Samantha (Scarlett Johansson), famous for it's artificial intelligence and playful personality. They quickly form a bond stronger than he has ever had before, and fall in love with each other. This movie is sweet, and sad, and not too far fetched an idea!

5. They Came Together; David Wain Click here to see trailer

This spoof of all rom-coms is hilarious, unexpected, and touching - all what you would expect from a Poehler/Rudd combo. This film is the dream-like and exaggerated retelling of the story of how Joel (Paul Rudd) and Molly (Amy Poehler) met. She was the owner of an indi candy store, and he was the corporate bad guy who was trying to shut her down.

6. Wristcutters: A Love Story; Goran Dukić Click here to see trailer

When Zia (Patrick Fugit) kills himself after breaking up with his girlfriend, he ends up in a bland, repetitive purgatory-like city with other people who have committed suicide. After learning that his ex girlfriend may be in this purgatory too, he embarks on a mission to find her - with the help from his new Russian friend Eugene (Shea Whigham) and a straggler (Shannyn Sossamon) they pick up on the way.

7. Confetti; Debbie Isitt Click here to see trailer

Martin Freeman, Jimmy Carr and Stephen Mangan star in this mockumentary following three couples who are about to get married, but with a twist. They're competing to win a famous wedding magazine's title of the Most Original Wedding of the Year. Each couple have a unique idea for their wedding, one musical, one tennis themed, and the other buck-naked. The wedding planning takes its toll on not only the couples, but the magazine editors, the wedding planners, and their family.

8. 500 Days of Summer; Marc Webb Click here to see trailer

This is not a love story, it's a story about love. When his mundane life is brightened by sweet Summer (Zooey Deschanel), Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) falls head over heels in love with her. When their relationship turns sour, he reflects on their time together and embarks on a mission in getting her back. Don't expect the traditional rom-com ending, but do enjoy the musical number, and Joseph's gorgeous role.
