Quirky Comedy

Slapstick and fart jokes aren't the only things that make an audience laugh. These films show us the obscure, the dark, the bad taste, and the downright ridiculous.

1. The Disaster Artist; James Franco Click here to see trailer
You've heard of the infamous The Room, by mysterious and socially awkward (an understatement) Tommy Wiseau. This is the biopic of the creation of this film and how hilarious, bizarre and frustrating it was to work with the self-made director. James Franco portrays Tommy perfectly - and with a split screen in the credits of the actual movie footage and Franco's portrayal you can see why he won Best Actor for this role.

2. The Skeleton Twins; Craig Johnson Click here to see trailer
This movie is equal parts funny, sad, and realistic. When twins Milo (Bill Hader) and Maggie (Kristen Wiig) reunite after they both attempt suicide on the same day. The pair work together to discover why they are so unhappy and to overcome their struggles in emotional and comedic ways.

3. The Invention of Lying; Ricky Gervais & Matthew Robinson Click here to see trailer
In a world where no one can lie, no one has ever heard of someone being dishonest but one man who discovers how to fool the system. Mark Bellison (Ricky Gervais) is a writer who seems to have nothing going for him. When his mother is dying in a hospital terrified of what comes after life, Mark invents heaven and the lie escalates from there.

4. Sisters; Jason Moore Click here to see trailer

Two sisters Maura (Amy Poehler) and Kate (Tina Fey) lead the complete opposite lives. One holds a stable job and is comfortably single, the other a single mum with a string of jobs and partners. When their parents decide to sell their family home, the pair decide to throw one last party that takes them back to their irresponsible teen years and nearly destroys their home and reputation.

5. Lost in Translation; Sofia Coppola Click here to see trailer
This is a bittersweet film about friendship, love, life and the ridiculousness of the activities we choose to fill it with. Movie star Bob Harris (Bill Murray) is in Japan filming a set of commercials, struggling with the language barrier and the culture shock. He meets newly wed Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) and the pair form a bond over their problems.

6. The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected); Noah Baumbach Click here to see trailer
I love Adam Sandler on his worst days, when he plays a roll this enthralling I get to prove to people that he's worth his weight in gold. Harold (Dustin Hoffman) is the dysfunctional father of three and retired sculptor, his children quietly bare his quirks until disaster strikes and they must work together to prepare for his career retrospective art show. This film was extremely funny in parts, and equally as heart warming and realistic.

7. The Night Before; Jonathan Levine Click here to see trailer
This film is the definition of 'in bad taste' but it works and is utterly hilarious. Cursing, drugs, alcohol, religion, rap, and On Christmas Eve - only someone who cannot be offended would enjoy this movie. Isaac (Seth Rogan) is about to become a father when his wife gives him a gift he can't believe - a box of drugs and permission to let loose one last time. With his lifelong buddies Ethan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Chris (Anthony Mackie) the trio reek havoc in churches, bars, and secret parties.

8. This is Where I Leave You; Shawn Levy Click here to see trailer
Four grown children are reunited when their father passes away, forcing them to stay together for a week to console their mother (Jane Fonda), and to get along even with the barrage of spouses, children, and surprises. Their mother isn't your typical house wife though - having recently had a boob job, got a lesbian lover, and talks freely about her dead husband's private parts.
