Dark and Dramatic

Not all films are going to give you a happy ending, lovable characters, or moments of peace. These movies are dark all around.

1. The Skin I Live In; Pedro Almodovar Click here to see trailer
This is unlike any other movie I could imagine - so twisted and dark but enjoyable at the same time. When brilliant surgeoun Dr. Ledgard (Antonio Banderas) invents a skin which can help save the lives of burn victims, he tests his creation on a young woman held captive in his huge house. But the true twisted mind of the doctor is shown after he finds his mentally ill daughter raped and unconscious outside a party, and punishes her attacker in the most obscure way.

2. Goodnight Mommy; Veronika Franz & Severin Fiala Click here to see trailer
When a woman has facial reconstructive surgery, her two young boys start to believe their mother has been replaced by a monster. Thanks to this movie I will forever be suspicious of people with head bandages. The two boys quietly test out whether she is an impostor, their tests getting more and more elaborate. With twists and turns and an exceptionally creepy ending this is a thriller you won't forget.

3. Get Out; Jordan Peele Click here to see trailer
This was probably the most talked about movie of 2017 - with an extremely high rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a staggering number of awards nominations, and for a good reason. Pitched as a horror, this film turns into a reflection of society and a comment on American history. Centering around Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) as he goes on the big trip to meet his girlfriend's parents. At first they seem perfectly nice albeit strange as the mother is a famous hypnotist. But, after Chris meets their hired help he grows suspicious of the family's intentions.

4. Whiplash; Damien Chazelle Click here to see trailer
Dark for a different reason than the others on this list, this was a highly stressful film with loath-able characters, but you won't be able to tear your eyes away. Andrew (Miles Teller) has just been accepted into a prestigious music school under the tutelage of Terence Fletcher (J.K Simmons). While at first Terence seems supportive, he shows Andrew why he has a reputation of being a cruel, nasty, and extremely scary teacher. Andrew strives to be the best and literally bleeds to please this terrifying man but it seems nothing is ever good enough.

5. Super Dark Times; Kevin Phillips Click here to see trailer
Well this one's in the name - a very dark movie coupled with a teenage coming-of-age drama. Zach (Owen Campbell) and Josh (Charlie Tahan) have been friends since childhood and think they can trust each other. But when Josh is the centre of a horrific and secret accident, the pair lets jealousy, guilt, and paranoia come between them.

6. The Neon Demon; Nicholas Winding Refn Click here to see trailer
This highly controversial film was either loved or repulsed by critics - with ratings often split straight down the middle. I did like this creepy, suspenseful 'horror' - based on young mode Jesse (Elle Fanning) who quickly makes a name for herself. This doesn't please fellow models who take their jealousy to creepy new levels. There's blood, pedophilic Keanu Reeves, torture, necrophilia, and lust, leaving nothing to the imagination.

7. The Virgin Suicides; Sofia Coppola Click here to see trailer
This film twists upside down everything we think we know about the typical suburban family and the mind of a teenage girl. Set in the 1970s, the Lisbon family consists of 5 beautiful and mysterious girls who are sheltered by their religious parents from most things deemed a normal part of growing up. When the youngest sister, Cecilia (Hannah R. Hall), attempts suicide the parents attempt to lighten up and throw a party, with horrific consequences. It is all downhill from there as the sisters become prisoners in their own home.

8. Buried; Rodrigo Cortes Click here to see trailer
Paul Conroy (Ryan Reynolds) is living out most people's worst nightmare - buried 6 feet deep in a makeshift coffin, with limited air running thin and a mobile phone to be taunted by his captors. This film is set entirely inside the coffin, with only the voices of the other characters to drive the plot, and as you can imagine it is extremely stressful.
