Boredom Busters #2

Sometimes you are so bored you can't even think - this is the second instalment of films which are sure to whisk you away from your boring life into a world of drama and thrills, still without having to much that much thought into it.

1. The Big Sick; Michael Showalter Click here to see trailer

Hilarious, realistic, one of a kind, and touching, this romantic comedy wowed audiences with its true story of finding the one. Kumail (Kumail Nanjiani) meets a sweet girl Emily (Zoe Kazan) who he quickly realises is perfect for him. Yet his family disapproves and keeps trying to arrange his marriage as is tradition. When Emily ends up in hospital in a coma with a mysterious illness, her family is quick to push Kamail away yet his humour and persistence might win them over.

2. Murder on the Orient Express; Kenneth Branagh Click here to see trailer

This film wasn't particularly well done or original, but was entertaining all the same and a timeless whodunnit. Following the infamous detective, Hercule Poirot, on his literal journey to discover the murderer among his fellow train passengers.

3. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri; Martin McDonagh Click here to see trailer

This film swept up at the Academy Awards and for a good reason. Badass mother Mildred (Frances McDormand) has one thing on her mind - justice for her brutally murdered teenage daughter. The police in her town have seemingly forgotten about the case, and Mildred reminds them by hiring three massive billboards asking why nothing has been done yet. It's a mystery, a drama, a comedy, a reflection of current social issues, and with more profanity than you could imagine. This is a must see movie.

In classic Wes Anderson style; this movie is hilarious, strange, sad, happy, and colourful. When famous oceanographer and documentary maker Zissou (Bill Murray) witnesses his friend mauled by an unbelievably huge shark, he sets out to find, film, and destroy the culprit with a team of misfits and law breakers.

5. Hanna; Joe Wright Click here to see trailer

"There was a very special girl, who lived in the woods, with her father." Hanna (Saoirse Ronan) has lived in exile for all of her life, being trained by her father to fight in combat. She travels to the 'real' world to assassinate a series of mysterious secret agents as an act of revenge for her dad, and travels across Europe meeting some of the angriest, creepiest mobsters and nicest hippy people you could imagine. This is a coming of age film in the most bizarre sense.

People really reacted to this one - in a negative way. With an abysmal 29% score on Rotten Tomatoes it wouldn't usually be one you'd recommend, but actually I thoroughly enjoyed it! Set in an idyllic new American neighbourhood, where everything seems perfect until *gasp* a young black family moves in creating a violent reaction from the community. Although, this is just a subplot to a creepy father and recent widow (Matt Damon) trying to claim insurance money for his wife's murder.

Yes - this is everything you'd expect from a Will Ferrell/Mark Wallberg Christmas comedy flick. Yes it is stupid, ridiculous, and loud, but I'll be damned if it isn't also funny. Sweet family man Brad (Will Ferrell) prides himself on his dedication to his new wife's children and running of the family home, until her ex-husband pulls up on a motorcycle and turns everything into a pissing contest.

Think; a budget version of Alien combined with a budget version of Gravity, without the happy endings - yet entertaining all the same. A group of astronauts are living in space, hunting for any sign of life in our solar system. When they find a tiny glob of bacteria however, they quickly wish they'd never found it as it destroys their ship, their lives, and potentially their planet.
