Epic Sounds

The soundtrack can make or break a movie. Whether it be a choice of bands or a new score, some have left a memorable dent in the musical world.

1. American Graffiti; George Lucas Click here to see trailer

Where were you in '62? A group of friends cruise the streets of small town California in celebration of their last day of summer vacation. Each of the friends have their own qualms, whether it be trying to get lucky or outrun bullies. All the while a mysterious DJ plays classic rock and roll tunes on their radios. The soundtrack, the style, and the dialogue will all have you wishing (or reminiscing) you could experience the rockin' time that was the 60s.

2. Where the Wild Things Are; Spike Jonze Click here to see trailer

Based on the children's book with little more than 50 words, Jonze has created a magical land of wild things. When mischievous Max (Max Records) feels misunderstood at home he runs away to the land of majestic and fierce Wild Things. They soon elect him their leader yet Max struggles to find a way to keep everyone happy. Karen O writes and performs many of the cute and whimsical songs.

3. Requiem for a Dream; Darren Aronofsky Click here to see trailer

This is the story of plump and lonely Sara (Ellen Burstyn), her sweet yet troubled son Harry (Jared Leto) and his girlfriend Marion (Jennifer Connelly). When Sara is offered a spot on an ambiguous TV show she desperately tries to lose weight, by taking a new drug which is basically crack. Meanwhile Harry is attempting to make his thousands as to afford a home for him and the love of his life, and Marion will do just about anything to fund their addictions. This film's score mirrors the craze and lulls of the characters search to find love and sanity, and will have you crying, longing and panicking along with them.

4. O Brother, Where Art Thou?; Joel and Ethan Coen Click here to see trailer

Based on the epic, Homer's Odyssey, Ulysses (George Clooney) escapes from prison with two dim witted friends Delmar (Tim Blake) and Pete (John Turturro). Ulysses is hoping to find his wife and beg for her forgiveness, but their travels are much harder than anticipated- with sirenes, a cyclops and the KKK stepping in their way. With some of the songs sung by the cast themselves, the music is a banjo tapping good time.

5. The Great Gatsby; Baz Luhrmann Click here to see trailer

Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) recounts his meeting with the infamous millionaire party-man, Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio). The more we discover about the mysterious Gatsby, the more we understand his motivations behind throwing lavish parties, to regain the love of Daisy (Carey Mulligan). The soundtrack is produced by Jay Z and really adds something different to the 1920s setting- hip hop and crazed rock from Jack White, Lana Del Rey, The XX, Andre 3000 and more.

6. Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny; Liam Lynch Click here to see trailer

Although duo Jack Black and Kyle Gass had a rocky start to their friendship, they eventually bond over love of music, weed, and the mysterious birthmarks on their butts which form the words 'Tenacious D' when pushed together. They embark on a journey to find the legendary guitar pick which grants the user special powers to perhaps defeat Satan himself. The music is all written and performed by the pair and is as catchy as it is hilarious. And cameos from Dave Grohl, Meatloaf, Tim Robbins, Amy Poehler and Ronnie James Dio.

7. Psycho; Alfred Hitchcock Click here to see trailer

This iconic movie comes with an iconic film score- the screeching, the whaling and the bass has kept us enchanted and terrified for decades. Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) attempts to leave her mundane life behind by stealing $40,000 from her boss and running away, yet is stopped by a terrible rainstorm. She meets strange and lonely Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins), who runs a small motel hidden from the main highway. When Marion doesn't return home her boyfriend, sister and a private investigator all embark on the search for her.

8. Moulin Rouge!; Baz Luhrmann Click here to see trailer

More musical genius from director Baz Luhrmann. A young poet (Ewan McGregor) meets notorious and stunning burlesque star (Nicole Kidman) and they fall head over heels in love. Their love is shrouded by money, sickness and trickery making this movie a glitzy tragedy.
