Dystopia

These films show us a dark glimpse at what the future might bring...

1. Children of Men; Alfonso Cuaron Click here to see trailer

Directed by the same man who did Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban you can expect something both brilliantly shot and creepy. The entire human race became infertile 18 years ago, so it comes as a shock to Theo (Clive Owen) to meet a young girl who is heavily pregnant. He then becomes her guardian and only hope for survival, as they navigate the tumultuous and dangerous dystopian England in order to find a safe-haven.

2. Vanilla Sky; Cameron Crowe Click here to see trailer

This very bizarre, yet clever, film will have to questioning what is reality and what is not. Without giving away too much, a young millionaire businessman (Tom Cruise) finds himself at the centre of a love triangle - but something has gone astray as he tells his story from behind a mask, to a very serious psychologist.

3. Maze Runner; Wes Ball Click here to see trailer

Confused teenager Thomas (Dylan O'Brien) arrives in a pretty and seemingly peaceful glade at the centre of a concrete maze. He has no memory of his previous life, and no idea why he is here, and must make friends with the other boys who have been dumped here too. Everyday, a few of them venture into the maze to try and find a way out. I put off seeing this film for a long time, as it seemed as though it was a tween-boys-only version of The Hunger Games. But I actually quite enjoyed it, with plot twists and a little comedy.

4. Gattaca; Andrew Niccol Click here to see trailer

In the future, success is determined by your DNA - and unlucky Vincent Freeman (Ethan Hawke) is unable to accomplish his dreams of becoming an astronaut as he isn't genetically perfect. He decides to purchase the DNA of a man confined to a wheelchair but otherwise genetically superior (Jude Law), in order to fool the system.

5. Mad Max: Fury Road; George Miller Click here to see trailer

This film can be described in one way - epic. Epic soundtrack, epic graphics, epic props, and epic female representation. The future is dirty, dusty, and corrupt, as the only source of water is rationed by an evil overlord - but not for long if Furiosa (Charlize Theron) and Max (Tom Hardy) can help it.

6. In Time; Andrew Niccol Click here to see trailer

In the future, there is no such thing as money. Everything is paid for by time left on your life-clock. Everyone stops aging at 25 and must either work hard for their minimal amount of time, and sometimes lose and die, or they are born into riches and can live forever. One day, Will (Justin Timberlake) is given more time than he has ever seen, but this makes him the target for both thieves and authorities.

7. V for Vendetta; James McTeigue Click here to see trailer

Masked vigilante V (Hugo Weaving) uses terrorist tactics in an attempt to overthrow the fascist government, with the help of his new accomplice Evey (Natalie Portman).

8. The Island; Michael Bay Click here to see trailer

If you'd actually like to enjoy the movie, don't watch the trailer as it gives away every twist possible. In a seemingly perfect place, friends (Ewan McGregor and Scarlet Johansson) are following the rules of their cult-like home with the hopes of being sent to the 'island' - a paradise world where humanity will be saved.
